Cape York Birdwings (male and female) - framed
Ornithoptera priamus priamus, also known as the Cape York birdwing, Priam's birdwing, northern birdwing, common green birdwing, or New Guinea birdwing is a widespread species of birdwing butterfly found in the central and south Moluccas, New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, Solomon Islands, and north-east Australia.
The specific name of Ornithoptera priamus, is named after Priam, the king of Troy during the Trojan War.
The males are velvety black with a green subcostal stripe and a green marginal stripe bordering the termen, tormen and dorsum of the wing. The hindwings are green with basal yellow-gold spots and a postdiscal chain of black spots.
The females are larger and are dark brown in colour. There is a chain of white postdiscal spots on the forewings and a chain of larger white postdiscal spots with dark centres on the hindwing.
This collection of butterflies, including these male and female Cape York Birdwings, were part of a historic collection purchased at a UK auction in 2024 from specimens collected in the 1970s.
The item is framed in a collector’s shadow box that is 35cm x 35cm.
