Margaret Deans, 'Exmoor Hawthorn', mixed media on canvas

£125.00

Born in Brighton, Margaret Deans attended Hove County Grammar School and after training at Hastings School of Nursing became a registered nurse in 1964. Subsequently she qualified as a Nurse Tutor, and gained an MA in Curriculum Development at Sussex University. Deans moved to Cornwall in 1987, and now lives and works in the west of the county. In 2010 she completed a BA (Hons) with the Open University in Art History, having taken up painting in 2001.

Deans acknowledges the influences of Howard Hodgkin, Patrick Heron, Matisse and Picasso. She believes it is the changing light that fuels her painting practice, primarily focussed on colour. For her the sense of the Cornish landscape is expressed in abstract shapes.

This piece, titled ‘Exmoor Hawthorn’ gives an abstract view of Exmoor and its varying colours and textures in the landscape. It is mixed media on canvas and is signed verso with the artist’s label.

The piece itself is 40cm x 50cm, and in the frame its overall dimensions are 44cm × 54cm.

If I were to keep this, I would reframe it in a bigger frame to off-set the canvas from the backing to give it additional depth and drama. The colours and textures of this artwork are beautiful and deserve a frame that gives them their due. The price reflects this need for it to be reframed.
