Tropical Golden Birdwing - framed

£35.00

Troides rhadamantus, the tropical golden birdwing, is a birdwingbutterfly that inhabits the Philippines. The species was first described by Hippolyte Lucas in 1835. Birdwings are named for their birdlike flight, their exceptional size and their angular wings sometimes with featherlike patterns.

The Golden Birdwings posses thermoreceptors on veins of their wings and on their antennae. These thermoreceptors are sensitive to sudden increases in temperature and they are thought to help the butterfly to avoid overheating while basking in the sun.

This collection of butterflies, including this Tropical Golden Birdwing, were part of a historic collection purchased at a UK auction in 2024 from specimens collected in the 1970s.

The item is framed in a collector’s shadow box that is 20cm x 20cm.
